Arlene opened the door to the county clerk’s office and she and Peggy walked inside. The aroma of cinnamon wafted through the air and the place smelled wonderful. They both stopped just inside the door and looked around. Ellen Sue had gone on a decorating spree since she’d taken over as county clerk. Scented candles burned all over the room, the place was filled with plants and flowers, small tables held numerous trinkets. It looked more like a country English cottage than a county clerk's office.

Arlene took in a deep breath and walked over to the counter. “Oh Ellen Sue, this place is amazing. I’m surprised they’ve let you do all this, but it’s just beautiful.”

“Thank you. You can actually get away with a lot when it’s your own money you’re spending. This place was so drab when I took over. I couldn’t stand it. I started with one candle and one plant and it just grew from there.”

“It’s definitely beautiful.” Peggy said. “We should tell Marnie to do something like this with her office. She might not mind being at work so much if it looked this nice.”

“I agree.” Arlene said.

“So, what can I do for you ladies today?” Ellen Sue asked.

“Well, we’re here to do some snooping around about a property, to be honest.” Arlene said.

“I’m sure I can help you with that. Which property are you interested in?”

“The big farm out on 64. I think Janie Sinclair lives there.”

“Yes, I remember that well. She bought that about ten years ago, I believe.”

“Who owned it before then?”

Ellen Sue typed some stuff into the keyboard. “I think it had two previous owners in a short span of time, but I’m a little fuzzy on those details. Let me pull up the history for you.” She said as she looked over the rim of her black-framed glasses at the girls and then back down at the computer screen. “Ah, yes, Janie bought it from the county judge. He didn’t own it long, though. He bought it from the Kirksleys. I think that’s right before they disappeared and then a month or so later, he sold it to Janie. I guess he decided he didn’t want that big of a place. Although it does seem big for a single woman like Janie.”

“I hadn’t thought about that. I know the property is huge, and I guess the house is pretty big, too.” Arlene glanced over at Peggy as she said it and raised her eyebrows.

“Yes.” Ellen Sue said. “It says here that it’s a six-bedroom home.”

“Whoa, that’s a lot of bedrooms. I can’t imagine needing that many bedrooms.”

“It was probably perfect for the Kirksleys. I think they wanted a big family. Not sure why they sold it unless the expense was just too much to keep up with.”

“That could be. Does it say how much the property sold for?”

“The Kirksleys sold it for half a million, but Janie got it for just over a hundred grand. The judge took a loss on that deal.
